How Can the Internet Help You Learn a Foreign Language?

by Ivana Vitali

The internet offers a wonderful way of doing many things but perhaps you have never considered using it to help you learn a foreign language. If you haven’t then you may very well be surprised to see how much it can be of use to you.

Join a Community

There are some exciting foreign language speaking community sites on the internet you could join. This will give you a chance to speak to both native speakers and other learners like you. If you use these sites wisely then you can learn a lot of new words and make some friends along the way.

Use Social Networking Sites

Another recommended way of chatting to speakers of your new language and becoming more confident in it is to use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. If you can become friends with some native speakers then you can pick up a lot of phrases here while also getting in some valuable practice in typing out new words and phrases.

Play Some Games

If you are a big fan of online games then why not play some in your new language instead of your mother tongue? This should be a relatively easy thing to do, as the majority of internet games don’t have a huge amount of written or spoken words on them. In fact, if you get caught up in the action you might even forget that you aren’t playing it in English, which is ideal really.

Listen to Music

The internet is also a place where you can find any sort of music you want to listen to. This means that one of your first stops should be on a trusted music download site. Here you should be able to choose from a selection of songs in the language you are learning. Music is a fine way of immersing yourself in a foreign tongue so you should try and listen to the songs as often as you can, even if it takes a while for you to fully appreciate them.

Online Learning

We can’t forget to mention those sites which are dedicated to giving good, practical advice to students of foreign languages. These websites are where you should go to clear up anything you aren’t clear on and to get hold of some new words and expressions. Of course, it is best to take more formal lessons as well. I tried to learn Chinese purely on the internet but finally, I decided to take Chinese classes in Dallas to complement my online learning.
